How to set up Blocked Apps

Turn on Blocked Apps, allow Screen Time access, and choose the apps you want paused after a long stretch of sitting.

Blocked Apps is optional, so nothing happens until you turn it on. It used to be called Active Pass. It works on iPhone and iPad.

Step 1: Open Blocked Apps

Open Wakeout and go to Settings > Advanced > Blocked Apps.

Step 2: Allow Screen Time access

Wakeout needs Apple's Screen Time permission to pause and unpause the apps you pick. Tap Enable Screen Time Access and follow the prompt. You only do this once.

Step 3: Choose your apps

  1. Tap Choose Apps to Block. Apple's app picker opens.

  2. Find a category you want, like Social or Entertainment, and tap the small arrow on its right edge to open it.

  3. Tap the circle next to each app you want. A checkmark appears.

  4. Tap Done.

Pick individual apps rather than a whole category. A whole category can pull in apps you rely on. Social, video and games are a good fit. Work and communication apps are best left off the list.

For example, instead of the whole Social category, open it and pick just the two or three you scroll the most. Leave apps like Slack or LinkedIn unchecked.

Want to change your list later? Come back and tap Add / remove apps.

Step 4: Switch it on

Turn on Block Apps When Inactive. From now on, during your active hours, your chosen apps pause after a long stretch of sitting and come back when you move.

You are always in control

  • Change your apps. Settings > Advanced > Blocked Apps > Add / remove apps.

  • Turn it off. Switch off Block Apps When Inactive and your apps are unblocked right away.

A couple of apps is plenty to start. If it is not for you, switch it off and carry on.
