When your apps pause and when they come back

What pauses your chosen apps, what brings them back, your active hours and days off.

Blocked Apps (formerly Active Pass) is optional and only affects the apps you chose. Here is how the timing works.

When it is active

Blocked Apps only runs during your active hours, the schedule you set under Settings > Reminders. Outside those hours, on days that are not in your schedule, and on days off, nothing is paused and your apps are free to use. Evenings and weekends stay yours, guilt free.

When your apps pause

During your active hours, if Wakeout sees you have been sitting for a while, your chosen apps pause. When you open one, you will see a screen that offers a one-minute Wakeout to bring it back.

What brings them back

  • A Wakeout, even a 1-minute one. Your apps stay free for a while afterward.

  • Movement that Apple Health tracks, like walking or climbing stairs.

  • Reaching your daily movement goal. Your apps then stay free for the rest of that day.

  • The Unlock button, any time you like. It frees your apps for one hour.

A little breathing room

If you were moving in the last hour, Wakeout gives you some time at the start of the next one before it checks again, so your apps do not pause the moment the clock changes.

Change your active hours

  1. Open Wakeout and go to Settings > Reminders.

  2. Choose the days and hours you want.

This is the same active schedule your reminders follow, so a change there applies to both. You can see your current hours on the Blocked Apps page (Settings > Advanced > Blocked Apps), but they are edited under Reminders.

Take a day off

  1. Go to Settings and tap Take a day off.

  2. Choose Today, 2 Days, 3 Days or 1 Week.

On a day off your apps are not paused, and days off do not break your streak.

If your apps did not come back right away

Your phone decides when apps can update in the background, so there can be a short gap between moving and your apps coming back. Opening Wakeout for a moment helps it catch up. You can also tap Unlock, or message us in the chat (we reply Monday to Friday).

In control, always

You can unlock for an hour, take a day off, or turn Blocked Apps off completely, and your apps are unblocked right away. See Need an app right now? Unlock your apps.
